No — the number stays with the company for life. The name change is recorded against the same registration, and your filing history carries over intact.
How quickly does the new name take effect?
Standard electronic filings are typically confirmed within a couple of working days; the same-day service does what it says if filed within Companies House hours. The change is legally effective when the new certificate is issued — not when you start using the name.
Can I choose any name I like?
It must be available, not 'same as' an existing name, and clear of the sensitive-words list — terms like 'group', 'holdings', 'chartered' or 'international' can need evidence or approval. We check all of this before filing so nothing bounces.
