Accounting software support
Accounting software promises to run itself; in practice it runs whatever it was set up to run, forever. A generic chart of accounts makes every report vague, an unconnected bank feed makes every balance fictional, and three years of 'sort later' makes a file nobody trusts. Our software support fixes the setup layer: right platform, right structure, feeds that reconcile — £99 for a fresh setup, from £149 for a rescue.
How we handle it
We're deliberately unaligned: no reseller commissions steering the recommendation. Xero, QuickBooks, FreeAgent or honest spreadsheets-plus-bridging — the answer is whatever fits your business and the MTD rules, taught to you in a recorded session so the knowledge stays.

Terms you'll meet along the way
Reconciliation
Matching your books to the bank, transaction by transaction — the discipline that makes every other number trustworthy.
Chart of accounts
The category structure your transactions are coded into. A generic one makes reports vague; a tailored one makes them useful.
Aged debtors/creditors
Who owes you and whom you owe, banded by how overdue — the two lists that predict cash flow problems before the bank balance does.
Quarterly updates
The summaries of income and expenses MTD requires every three months — replacing the single annual return rhythm for mandated taxpayers.
Bridging software
Tools that connect spreadsheets to HMRC's systems, keeping spreadsheet workflows legal under MTD's digital-records rules.
Final declaration
The year-end submission that finalises your position under MTD for Income Tax — the successor to the traditional return.
Accounting software support: your questions answered
Can you just look at my file and tell me how bad it is?
Yes — a file review is quick and we'll give you a straight verdict: fine, fixable (with a fixed rescue price), or honestly faster to rebuild. The usual finding is a healthy file with three specific recurring errors, which is a cheap fix and a five-minute lesson.
We're switching software — will we lose our history?
No — migrations carry opening balances, contacts, unpaid invoices and typically one to two years of transactions. The acceptance test is your next VAT return reconciling without drama. From £199 depending on volume and how the old file was kept.
Do you provide ongoing software support after setup?
Bookkeeping clients get it inherently — we're in your file monthly. Otherwise, the recorded training session (£89) covers your actual workflows, and ad-hoc questions are answered at fixed mini-fees rather than a support contract you'll resent.
Xero, QuickBooks or FreeAgent — which should I pick?
It genuinely depends: FreeAgent suits contractors and is free with some business bank accounts; Xero scales best for growing businesses with staff and stock; QuickBooks sits between on price and features. We recommend against whatever doesn't fit — we don't earn from your subscription either way.
Can you migrate my history, or do I start from scratch?
History comes too: opening balances, customer and supplier records, unpaid invoices, and usually one to two years of transactions. The test of a good migration is that your first VAT return after the switch reconciles without drama — that's the standard we work to.
Which bookkeeping software do you use?
Xero, QuickBooks or FreeAgent — whichever suits your business (or whichever you already use). Software subscription can be included in your monthly fee, and we handle all the setup and migration.
What counts as a transaction?
Each line on your bank statement — a payment in or out. Most one-person businesses sit comfortably under 50 a month. If you drift over your band we'll tell you before the fee changes, never after.
When does Making Tax Digital actually apply to me?
For Income Tax: April 2026 if your combined self-employment and property income is over £50,000; April 2027 for over £30,000. VAT-registered businesses have been in MTD for VAT for years already. The income test uses your most recent filed return — which surprises people whose income fluctuates around the line.
What actually changes under MTD for Income Tax?
Three things: records must be kept digitally (spreadsheets need bridging software), a summary update goes to HMRC every quarter, and a final declaration replaces the traditional return. Same tax, different rhythm — the risk isn't paying more, it's missing quarterly deadlines that never existed before.
