What makes us different

Online accountants vs the high street

A high-street accountant in West Midlands typically bills by the hour, meets by appointment and prices each extra question. We work the other way round: one fixed fee agreed in writing before anything starts, every question included, and the whole engagement handled online — which is exactly why we can serve The Down at fees a walk-in office can't match.

There's no office to fund in The Down and no office to visit: records travel through our secure portal or WhatsApp, approvals happen on your phone, and filings go to HMRC and Companies House electronically. You get the same qualified work — minus the overheads, the travel and the surprises on the invoice.

How it works

Fixed quote in writing

The quote arrives in writing, covers everything discussed, and is the number you'll actually pay. No revisions later.

Online onboarding

Identity checks, engagement letter, secure record upload — all handled from wherever you are in The Down. We chase whatever's missing.

Nothing is filed until you've seen and approved it. Once you have, submission is electronic and confirmation comes straight back.

Serving The Down

The same service in The Down as anywhere — by design

Whether your business trades from The Down itself or you simply live there and work everywhere, the tax rules are national — and so are we. The Down clients get the same preparers, the same fixed fees and the same deadline tracking as every other town on this site.

Smaller towns like The Down are exactly why we work online: the nearest high-street firm may be a drive away, keep office hours, and price like scarcity. Your accountant should be as close as your phone — and priced like competition exists.

Questions

The Down company formation FAQs

Should I be a sole trader or a limited company?

It depends on profit level, risk and how you'll pay yourself. Very roughly, incorporation starts becoming tax-efficient around £30,000–£40,000 of profit — but liability protection and client expectations matter too. Try our Ltd vs sole trader calculator, or ask us for a view on your numbers.

Can I use your address as my registered office?

Yes — our registered office service keeps your home address off the public record at Companies House and includes scanning of statutory mail.

What are my duties once the company exists?

Annual accounts, a confirmation statement, corporation tax returns, and proper records — plus payroll if you take a salary and VAT if you pass the threshold. Our startup pack sets all of it up so nothing gets missed in year one.

Do I need to visit an office in The Down?

No — there's nothing to visit and nothing to print. We're an online firm: records go through our secure portal or WhatsApp, and everything is filed electronically. It works the same whether you're in The Down or anywhere else in West Midlands.

I searched "company formation near me" — is this service really local to The Down?

The Down is fully covered, yes. The work is done online, which in practice means more local than an office: same-day replies instead of appointment slots, and the same published fixed fee whether you're in The Down town centre or the edge of West Midlands. If you'd rather talk it through first, WhatsApp us — a real person answers.

Who will actually handle my company formation?

Bohzo Accountants — a trading name of Bohzo Ltd, a registered UK company (No. 15031604). You get a named contact, a fixed fee in writing, and nothing is filed until you've reviewed and approved it.

How do your fixed fees work?

You tell us your situation, we quote one fixed price in writing before any work starts, and that price never changes mid-job. If your case is unusually complex we'll say so up front and agree a different fixed price — but the fee is always agreed before we begin, never after.

Worth knowing

The short version of the rules that matter

Side income and the £1,000 allowance

Selling online, freelancing on the side, renting out equipment — each can be a "trade" in HMRC's eyes once it's done with a profit motive. The good news: registering is straightforward, expenses become claimable, and done early it's a non-event.

Dividends: the allowance is small now

Dividends can only be paid from accumulated profits, and paperwork matters: board minutes and dividend vouchers, dated correctly. "Illegal dividends" isn't dramatic language — overdrawn payments can be reclassified, with tax consequences, if the profits weren't there.

Making Tax Digital is coming for income tax

From April 2026, self-employed people and landlords with qualifying income over £50,000 move onto Making Tax Digital for Income Tax: digital records and quarterly updates to HMRC, not one annual return. The year before is the right time to get bookkeeping into shape.

When HMRC writes to you

Scam "HMRC" messages outnumber real ones — HMRC doesn't demand payment by gift card or threaten arrest by text. Real letters have reference numbers that we can verify directly with HMRC before anyone responds.

IR35 and working through a company

Inside-IR35 and outside-IR35 engagements need different setups — sometimes umbrella, sometimes the company, sometimes both across a year. Contractors who plan this per-engagement keep more and worry less.

What to actually look for in an accountant

A good accountant should be able to tell you, in plain English, what they'll do, when, and for exactly how much. Vagueness on any of the three is the tell. Everything else — size of firm, fancy office, distance from The Down — is decoration.

Payments on account, decoded

Payments on account catch people out because the first year effectively bills you one-and-a-half years of tax at once. Knowing that in advance changes how you save through the year — and if profits fall, we can apply to reduce the July payment rather than lending HMRC money interest-free.

Tax is a cash-flow event

The businesses that struggle with tax bills rarely have a tax problem; they have a timing problem. Knowing the bill in September instead of January — which filing early gives you for free — is the difference between planning and scrambling.

General guidance, not personal advice — thresholds and dates change. For advice on your own position in The Down, message us and we'll answer against your actual numbers.
