Received an HMRC letter?
HMRC letters are engineered to be taken seriously, and the right response depends entirely on which of the five species you're holding: a nudge letter (they have data suggesting undeclared income), a compliance check (formal questions), a penalty notice, a simple demand, or a routine notice everyone panics over needlessly. Misreading the species is how small issues become enquiries.
How we handle it
Send us a photo of the letter — we'll tell you within one working day what it is, what HMRC actually knows or wants, and exactly what to do. Decode-and-advise is £99; if a reply needs drafting or the matter runs deeper, you'll get the fixed price for the next step before deciding anything.

Terms you'll meet along the way
Aspect vs full enquiry
An aspect enquiry questions specific entries in a return; a full enquiry opens the whole return. The letter's wording tells you which — and shapes the strategy.
Behaviour categories
HMRC penalties scale by whether an error was despite reasonable care, careless, or deliberate — the classification is usually the real battlefield.
Time to Pay
An instalment arrangement with HMRC for tax you can't pay at once — routinely agreed, and engaging early is what keeps it available.
Discovery assessment
HMRC's power to assess tax outside normal enquiry windows — 4 years for innocent error, 6 for carelessness, 20 for deliberate behaviour.
UTR
Your Unique Taxpayer Reference — the 10-digit number HMRC issues when you register for Self Assessment. Lifelong, and needed for every return.
Payments on account
Advance payments toward next year's tax, due 31 January and 31 July, triggered once your bill passes £1,000. The first year they apply effectively bills 150% at once.
SA100
The main Self Assessment return form. Supplementary pages bolt on for employment, self-employment, property, capital gains and foreign income.
Balancing payment
The difference between what your payments on account covered and what the year's tax actually was — settled each 31 January.
Received an HMRC letter?: your questions answered
What is a 'nudge letter' and why did I get one?
A nudge letter says HMRC holds data — from banks, letting agents, online platforms, overseas authorities — that doesn't obviously match your tax record, and invites you to check. It's not an enquiry yet, and that's the opportunity: responding correctly (sometimes with a disclosure, often with a clarification) usually prevents one. Ignoring it is the worst available move.
Should I reply to HMRC myself before getting advice?
Resist the urge, even when innocent. Well-meaning replies routinely volunteer scope HMRC never asked for, and casual phrasing gets read as admission. A one-day pause to have the letter decoded costs £99; an accidentally widened enquiry costs months. Everything we send is precise, minimal and correct.
The letter gives me 30 days — what if that's nearly up?
Tell us today: deadlines on HMRC letters are usually extendable with a phone call from your agent, and buying that time properly is often our first act. What matters is engaging before the deadline passes, because silence converts polite letters into formal ones.
I've received a compliance check letter — how bad is it?
Usually less bad than it reads. Most checks focus on one aspect — a expenses category, a VAT period, a source of income HMRC can see but your return doesn't show. The response strategy matters enormously: answer exactly what's asked, accurately, with nothing extra. That's the £299 first stage, and many checks end there.
What if I know there's actually something wrong?
Then a voluntary disclosure — made before HMRC finds it — is dramatically cheaper in penalties, sometimes the difference between 0–30% and up to 100% of the tax. We prepare the numbers, present the disclosure and negotiate the settlement. It's the conversation people put off for years and resolve in weeks.
What does the £129 fee include?
Preparation and online filing of your full SA100 return, including the supplementary pages your situation needs. If your return is more complex — rental income, capital gains — the packages above show the fixed price, and we confirm it in writing before starting.
I've missed the deadline — can you still help?
Yes. Late returns are common and fixable: we prepare and file the outstanding return quickly, and where there's a reasonable excuse we help you appeal penalties. The sooner it's filed, the sooner the penalties stop growing.
When do I have to register for VAT?
When your taxable turnover in any rolling 12-month period passes £90,000 — a rolling test, not your accounting year, and the most common way businesses get caught out. We monitor it for bookkeeping clients automatically.
Which VAT scheme is best for me?
It depends on your margins and customers. The flat-rate scheme suits some service businesses; cash accounting helps if customers pay slowly; standard suits most. We'll compare them for your numbers before registering you.
