What makes us different

Online accountants vs the high street

A high-street accountant in Wales typically bills by the hour, meets by appointment and prices each extra question. We built the opposite: written fixed fees agreed up front, unlimited questions inside the price, and a fully online workflow — no premises anywhere, so no premises priced into your fee in The Duffryn.

There's no office to fund in The Duffryn and no office to visit: records travel through our secure portal or WhatsApp, approvals happen on your phone, and filings go to HMRC and Companies House electronically. You get the same qualified work — minus the overheads, the travel and the surprises on the invoice.

Questions

Accountants in The Duffryn: FAQs

Do you have an office in The Duffryn?

No — and that's deliberate. We're online accountants serving The Duffryn and the whole UK: records travel through our secure portal or WhatsApp, filings go to HMRC electronically, and the savings on premises show up in our fixed fees.

Which accounting services are available in The Duffryn?

All our core services are available in The Duffryn: Self Assessment, limited company accounts, bookkeeping, VAT, payroll, corporation tax, sole trader accounts and company formation — each at a fixed fee. Specialist services are available on request.

I searched "accountant near me" — do you actually cover The Duffryn?

Yes — The Duffryn is fully covered. We're online accountants, so "near" works differently: no office to drive to, but same-day responses, filings handled for The Duffryn businesses every week, and local detail like Wales deadlines and postcodes built into how we work. For most people that beats an office across town they'd visit once a year.

How quickly can you start?

Usually the same week. Message us on WhatsApp, get your fixed quote in writing, complete online onboarding (including the identity checks UK accountants must run), and send your records — most engagements start within days.

How do your fixed fees work?

Every job is quoted as one fixed price in writing before work starts, and that price never changes mid-job. No hourly billing, no surprise invoices — if something extra comes up, it gets its own quote first.

Worth knowing

The short version of the rules that matter

What to actually look for in an accountant

Compare accountants on the things that bite later: is the fee fixed and written down, what exactly is included, who does the work, how fast do they answer in January. Proximity to The Duffryn stopped being the differentiator the day filings went electronic.

Penalties escalate on a timetable

Self Assessment lateness is priced in stages: £100 immediately, daily £10 penalties after three months (up to £900), then percentage-based charges at six and twelve months — all separate from interest on unpaid tax. The curve is designed to reward filing sooner, whatever the state of your records.

The 31 January deadline, without the panic

Online Self Assessment returns are due by 31 January, along with any balancing payment — and HMRC's £100 penalty applies the moment the deadline passes, even if you owe nothing. Most The Duffryn clients who come to us in January still file on time; the records just need to arrive before the last week.

IR35 and working through a company

Inside-IR35 and outside-IR35 engagements need different setups — sometimes umbrella, sometimes the company, sometimes both across a year. Contractors who plan this per-engagement keep more and worry less.

Payments on account, decoded

If your last Self Assessment bill was over £1,000, HMRC usually asks for next year's tax in advance — half on 31 January, half on 31 July. It's the number-one cause of "why is my bill double?" calls, and it's manageable: if your income has dropped, the payments can be reduced with a claim.

Dividends: the allowance is small now

The tax-free dividend allowance is down to £500, so almost any director taking dividends now pays some dividend tax — and needs a Self Assessment return to report it. The classic small-salary-plus-dividends strategy still works; it just needs actual planning rather than folklore.

Sole trader or limited company?

The honest answer changes with your profits. At lower profits, sole trader simplicity usually wins; as profits grow, a limited company's mix of salary and dividends, corporation tax rates and liability protection starts earning its extra admin. We run the actual numbers before recommending either.

Switching accountants is easier than you think

The best time to switch is after a filing, but it works at any point in the year. What matters is not letting a looming deadline stop you: a new firm can usually pick up an in-flight year faster than you'd think.

General guidance, not personal advice — thresholds and dates change. For advice on your own position in The Duffryn, message us and we'll answer against your actual numbers.
