Company formation accountant
Anyone can register a company in ten minutes — and accountants spend years untangling the ten-minute versions: wrong share structures that cost real money to fix, missing registrations discovered via penalty, home addresses published forever on the register. Forming through an accountant means the company is born correct: shares set up for how you'll actually pay yourselves, corporation tax registered, PAYE and VAT added if you need them, and a registered office that isn't your living room.
How we handle it
From £49 plus the £50 Companies House fee, with the identity verification the 2025 rules require built into the process. Usually done within a day — and the follow-up conversation about paying yourself tax-efficiently is included, because that's the question every new director asks a week later.

Terms you'll meet along the way
Model articles
The default constitutional rules a company adopts at formation. Fine for simple companies; customised articles matter once investors or multiple founders arrive.
Share classes
Different types of shares (A, B, ordinary, preference) carrying different rights to dividends, votes and capital — the structure decision that's cheap at formation and expensive later.
Authentication code
The 6-character code Companies House issues at incorporation — the company's electronic signature, required for every online filing.
Personal Code
The 11-character identifier directors receive after mandatory identity verification (in force since November 2025), used on filings alongside the company's authentication code.
Rolling 12-month test
The £90,000 threshold is measured over any consecutive 12 months, not your accounting year — the detail that catches most late registrants.
Effective date of registration
The date your VAT obligations start — set by when you crossed the threshold, or chosen deliberately for voluntary registrations.
Voluntary registration
Registering below the threshold — often smart for B2B businesses (reclaim input VAT, look established), usually a price rise for B2C.
Company formation accountant: your questions answered
Why form through an accountant rather than a cheap formation site?
The formation sites file what you type. The expensive mistakes are things you didn't know to type: share classes that block a future investor, 50/50 splits with no deadlock plan, missing PAYE when you planned a salary. We ask the questions first, then file — same speed, correct foundations.
What do I need to start a company?
A name (we check availability and the naming rules), at least one director and shareholder — the same person is fine — a UK registered office (ours from £69/year if you'd rather not publish your home), and identity verification done from your phone. That's genuinely it; most formations complete within a day.
What happens after the company exists?
The duties start: accounts yearly, a confirmation statement yearly, corporation tax, payroll if you take a salary, VAT past the threshold. Our startup pack sets all of it up at formation so nothing surfaces as a surprise penalty in month eleven — and you get a plain-English calendar of what's due when.
Should I be a sole trader or a limited company?
It depends on profit level, risk and how you'll pay yourself. Very roughly, incorporation starts becoming tax-efficient around £30,000–£40,000 of profit — but liability protection and client expectations matter too. Try our Ltd vs sole trader calculator, or ask us for a view on your numbers.
Can I use your address as my registered office?
Yes — our registered office service keeps your home address off the public record at Companies House and includes scanning of statutory mail.
Why shouldn't I just use my home address?
Because the registered office appears on the public register, where anyone — marketers, ex-customers, strangers — can look it up, and historic addresses stay visible for years even after you change them. A service address costs less than most people guess and fixes it permanently.
What's the difference between a registered office and a director's service address?
The registered office is the company's official address; the service address is each director's personal official address. Both are public, so both need covering — our combined package does exactly that.
When do I legally have to register?
When your taxable turnover passes £90,000 in any rolling 12-month period — not your accounting year, which is the detail that catches people. You must also register if you expect to cross it in the next 30 days alone. We'll check your position for free before you commit to anything.
Is registering voluntarily ever worth it?
Often, yes — if your customers are VAT-registered businesses, you reclaim VAT on your costs while your prices stay effectively unchanged to them. If you sell to the public, it's usually a straight price rise. That's exactly the conversation we have before filing.
Do I need PAYE if I'm the only person in the company?
If you pay yourself a salary above HMRC's lower earnings threshold, yes — a sole director drawing the usual tax-efficient salary needs an employer scheme just like a ten-person firm. It's how the salary gets reported and how your state pension record gets credited.
How long does registration take?
The application goes in immediately; HMRC typically posts your employer references within one to three weeks. Register before the first pay day — you can't run compliant payroll without the references, and backdating is messier than waiting.
