HMRC investigation accountant

When HMRC opens an enquiry, everything you send becomes evidence — which is why the first reply matters more than any other. An investigation accountant controls that conversation: we decode what HMRC is actually probing, answer precisely what's asked, challenge scope creep, and argue the penalty position from the behaviour categories the law actually uses.

How we handle it

Fixed fees per stage, starting at £299 for reviewing the letter and drafting the first response — which is as far as many compliance checks ever need to go. If it runs deeper, or if you already know a disclosure is needed, you'll have the price and the plan in writing before each step.

How it works

From first message to done

1. Tell us your situation

WhatsApp or the form — a few sentences is enough. A real person replies the same working day.

2. Fixed quote in writing

One price for the job, confirmed before anything starts. Complex case? We say so now, not on the invoice.

3. Records over WhatsApp or portal

Photos of documents are fine. We chase whatever's missing — that's part of the job, not yours.

4. Approve, we file, you're done

You review everything first; filings go to HMRC or Companies House electronically with same-day confirmation.

Jargon, translated

Terms you'll meet along the way

Aspect vs full enquiry

An aspect enquiry questions specific entries in a return; a full enquiry opens the whole return. The letter's wording tells you which — and shapes the strategy.

Behaviour categories

HMRC penalties scale by whether an error was despite reasonable care, careless, or deliberate — the classification is usually the real battlefield.

Time to Pay

An instalment arrangement with HMRC for tax you can't pay at once — routinely agreed, and engaging early is what keeps it available.

Discovery assessment

HMRC's power to assess tax outside normal enquiry windows — 4 years for innocent error, 6 for carelessness, 20 for deliberate behaviour.

UTR

Your Unique Taxpayer Reference — the 10-digit number HMRC issues when you register for Self Assessment. Lifelong, and needed for every return.

Payments on account

Advance payments toward next year's tax, due 31 January and 31 July, triggered once your bill passes £1,000. The first year they apply effectively bills 150% at once.

SA100

The main Self Assessment return form. Supplementary pages bolt on for employment, self-employment, property, capital gains and foreign income.

Balancing payment

The difference between what your payments on account covered and what the year's tax actually was — settled each 31 January.

Questions

HMRC investigation accountant: your questions answered

Why did HMRC pick me?

Usually data: something reported to HMRC (bank interest, platform income, property transactions, a supplier's records) doesn't match your return, or your figures sit outside the pattern for your trade. Occasionally it's random. The letter's wording usually tells us which — and that shapes the whole strategy.

Should I just ring HMRC and explain?

Not before advice, however innocent the explanation. Volunteered information routinely widens enquiries, and imprecise phrasing gets treated as admission. Everything through us goes in writing, accurate and scoped — boring correspondence is winning correspondence.

What will an enquiry cost me in the end?

If your returns were right: usually nothing but our fee — enquiries do close with no adjustment. If tax was underpaid, the outcome is tax owed plus interest plus a penalty scaled by behaviour (careless vs deliberate) and cooperation — which good representation directly reduces, often to a suspended or nil penalty for careless errors.

I've received a compliance check letter — how bad is it?

Usually less bad than it reads. Most checks focus on one aspect — a expenses category, a VAT period, a source of income HMRC can see but your return doesn't show. The response strategy matters enormously: answer exactly what's asked, accurately, with nothing extra. That's the £299 first stage, and many checks end there.

What if I know there's actually something wrong?

Then a voluntary disclosure — made before HMRC finds it — is dramatically cheaper in penalties, sometimes the difference between 0–30% and up to 100% of the tax. We prepare the numbers, present the disclosure and negotiate the settlement. It's the conversation people put off for years and resolve in weeks.

What does the £129 fee include?

Preparation and online filing of your full SA100 return, including the supplementary pages your situation needs. If your return is more complex — rental income, capital gains — the packages above show the fixed price, and we confirm it in writing before starting.

I've missed the deadline — can you still help?

Yes. Late returns are common and fixable: we prepare and file the outstanding return quickly, and where there's a reasonable excuse we help you appeal penalties. The sooner it's filed, the sooner the penalties stop growing.

When do I have to register for VAT?

When your taxable turnover in any rolling 12-month period passes £90,000 — a rolling test, not your accounting year, and the most common way businesses get caught out. We monitor it for bookkeeping clients automatically.

Which VAT scheme is best for me?

It depends on your margins and customers. The flat-rate scheme suits some service businesses; cash accounting helps if customers pay slowly; standard suits most. We'll compare them for your numbers before registering you.
