Do I need an accountant?

Honest answer: not everyone needs an accountant. One employment, simple affairs, comfortable with HMRC's website — you're fine, and any accountant who implies otherwise is selling. The need arrives with any of three things: complexity (a company, property income, VAT, multiple income streams), stakes (numbers big enough that an error hurts), or the moment your evenings are worth more than the fee.

How we handle it

The pattern we see constantly: people arrive two years after the point they'd have benefited — usually holding either a penalty, an overpaid tax bill, or a shoebox. Our fee structure exists to remove the fear of asking: message us your situation and we'll say, for free, whether you need us — including 'not yet, and here's what to watch for.'

How it works

From first message to done

1. Tell us your situation

WhatsApp or the form — a few sentences is enough. A real person replies the same working day.

2. Fixed quote in writing

One price for the job, confirmed before anything starts. Complex case? We say so now, not on the invoice.

3. Records over WhatsApp or portal

Photos of documents are fine. We chase whatever's missing — that's part of the job, not yours.

4. Approve, we file, you're done

You review everything first; filings go to HMRC or Companies House electronically with same-day confirmation.

Jargon, translated

Terms you'll meet along the way

UTR

Your Unique Taxpayer Reference — the 10-digit number HMRC issues when you register for Self Assessment. Lifelong, and needed for every return.

Payments on account

Advance payments toward next year's tax, due 31 January and 31 July, triggered once your bill passes £1,000. The first year they apply effectively bills 150% at once.

SA100

The main Self Assessment return form. Supplementary pages bolt on for employment, self-employment, property, capital gains and foreign income.

Balancing payment

The difference between what your payments on account covered and what the year's tax actually was — settled each 31 January.

Statutory accounts

The formal year-end accounts every company must file at Companies House — publicly visible, prepared to FRS standards.

FRS 105 / FRS 102 1A

The two accounting standards small UK companies use: FRS 105 for micro-entities (minimal disclosure), FRS 102 1A for small companies (fuller picture).

CT600

The corporation tax return filed with HMRC alongside a tax computation — due 12 months after year end, though the tax is due at 9 months and a day.

Accounting reference date

Your company's official year-end date, set at incorporation (changeable within limits). Accounts are due 9 months after it.

Questions

Do I need an accountant?: your questions answered

What does an accountant cost for someone like me?

Published, not quoted-after-coffee: simple Self Assessment £129, sole trader accounts plus return £149, limited company from £299 a year, monthly small-business bundles £99–£180. The comparison isn't fee-versus-free; it's fee versus your hours, your missed claims and your error risk. Frequently the return pays for itself in claimed expenses alone.

What are the signs I've outgrown DIY?

You Google tax questions and get less sure with each result. Your return has more than one income type. You've formed (or should form) a company. A brown envelope raised your heart rate. January cost you a weekend. Any two of those and the fee stops being a cost and starts being the cheaper option.

Accountant, bookkeeper, or software — which do I actually need?

Software records; bookkeepers maintain; accountants interpret, file and advise. Small operations often need software plus an annual accountant. Growing ones add bookkeeping monthly. The wrong answer is paying for interpretation you don't need or skipping filing help you do. Describe your situation and we'll prescribe honestly — even where the prescription is 'just software, for now.'

What does the £129 fee include?

Preparation and online filing of your full SA100 return, including the supplementary pages your situation needs. If your return is more complex — rental income, capital gains — the packages above show the fixed price, and we confirm it in writing before starting.

I've missed the deadline — can you still help?

Yes. Late returns are common and fixable: we prepare and file the outstanding return quickly, and where there's a reasonable excuse we help you appeal penalties. The sooner it's filed, the sooner the penalties stop growing.

What's included in the monthly fee?

Everything listed in your package, with no metering: accounts, tax, bookkeeping, and VAT/payroll on the larger plans. Questions and calls are included too — we'd rather hear about a decision before you make it than fix it after.

We already have an accountant — is switching painful?

No. You tell them you're moving; we handle professional clearance and record transfer. Most switches complete inside two weeks, and the health-check fee is refunded when you join.

My company hasn't traded — do I still need to file?

Yes. Even dormant companies must file accounts at Companies House and usually a confirmation statement. Our dormant package (£99) handles it all so you avoid penalties for a company that isn't even trading.

Which accounting standard will my accounts use?

Most small companies file micro-entity accounts under FRS 105 or small-company accounts under FRS 102 Section 1A. We pick the right one for your size and circumstances — it affects what's disclosed publicly at Companies House, and we'll explain the trade-offs.

Which bookkeeping software do you use?

Xero, QuickBooks or FreeAgent — whichever suits your business (or whichever you already use). Software subscription can be included in your monthly fee, and we handle all the setup and migration.

What counts as a transaction?

Each line on your bank statement — a payment in or out. Most one-person businesses sit comfortably under 50 a month. If you drift over your band we'll tell you before the fee changes, never after.
