Self Assessment accountant
A Self Assessment accountant earns their fee twice: once by taking the January dread off your plate, and again by knowing which expenses, allowances and reliefs your DIY return quietly misses. Ours is £129 fixed for a straightforward return — prepared, checked against what HMRC already knows about you, and filed electronically the day you approve it.
How we handle it
Rental income, dividends, capital gains, a first year of self-employment, or a return that's already late — each has a published fixed price, and none of them shocks us. Send your records over WhatsApp or the portal; we chase whatever's missing.

Terms you'll meet along the way
UTR
Your Unique Taxpayer Reference — the 10-digit number HMRC issues when you register for Self Assessment. Lifelong, and needed for every return.
Payments on account
Advance payments toward next year's tax, due 31 January and 31 July, triggered once your bill passes £1,000. The first year they apply effectively bills 150% at once.
SA100
The main Self Assessment return form. Supplementary pages bolt on for employment, self-employment, property, capital gains and foreign income.
Balancing payment
The difference between what your payments on account covered and what the year's tax actually was — settled each 31 January.
60-day rule
UK residential property gains must be reported and the tax paid within 60 days of completion — separate from and earlier than Self Assessment.
Business Asset Disposal Relief
The relief (formerly Entrepreneurs' Relief) taxing qualifying business disposals at 10% up to a lifetime limit — conditions apply for at least two years before sale.
Annual exempt amount
The slice of gains each person can realise tax-free per year — now small, which makes timing disposals across tax years worth planning.
Self Assessment accountant: your questions answered
Is £129 really the whole price for my tax return?
For a straightforward return with one income source, yes — preparation, supplementary pages, filing and deadline management included. Rental income makes it £169, capital gains £199, late-return rescue £179. Whichever applies is confirmed in writing before we start, and that's the number on the invoice.
Why use an accountant instead of filing myself?
Three common reasons: your time is worth more than the fee, your situation stopped being simple (property, dividends, CGT, foreign income), or you've been stung before — a missed relief, a wrong payment on account, a penalty. We also spot the things software doesn't ask about.
How fast can you file once I send my records?
Straightforward returns usually go to you for approval within 2–3 working days, faster in a deadline emergency. The bottleneck is almost always missing records — which is why chasing them is part of the service, not your job.
What does the £129 fee include?
Preparation and online filing of your full SA100 return, including the supplementary pages your situation needs. If your return is more complex — rental income, capital gains — the packages above show the fixed price, and we confirm it in writing before starting.
I've missed the deadline — can you still help?
Yes. Late returns are common and fixable: we prepare and file the outstanding return quickly, and where there's a reasonable excuse we help you appeal penalties. The sooner it's filed, the sooner the penalties stop growing.
Do sole traders legally need accounts?
There's no Companies House filing for sole traders, but you must keep records supporting your Self Assessment — and proper accounts almost always save more tax than they cost, because expenses stop slipping through the cracks.
What expenses can I claim?
Anything wholly and exclusively for the business: materials, tools, mileage or vehicle costs, phone, insurance, home-office use, software, professional fees and more. Our job is claiming everything legitimate — clients are usually surprised by what they'd been missing.
How does mortgage interest relief work now?
Under Section 24 you can't deduct mortgage interest from rental profits — instead you get a 20% tax credit. Higher-rate landlords pay noticeably more than under the old rules, which is why the sums (and the company question) deserve proper attention.
Should I hold my properties in a limited company?
Sometimes. Companies deduct interest in full and pay corporation tax rates, but you face costs extracting profits and potentially CGT/SDLT moving existing properties in. We'll run your actual numbers — the honest answer is 'it depends', and we'll show you on what.
What is the 60-day rule?
If you sell a UK residential property at a gain, you must file a CGT return and pay the tax within 60 days of completion — separate from, and much earlier than, Self Assessment. Penalties apply immediately after day 60. It's the most-missed deadline in UK tax.
What rate of CGT will I pay?
For most assets 18% or 24% depending on your income band. Business asset disposal relief can cut qualifying business sales to 14%. Your other income determines the split — which is exactly what we calculate.
