Late Self Assessment
January 31st passed, the return didn't go in, and every week since has made it feel bigger. Here's the honest picture: the penalty is £100 so far if you're within three months, the fix takes days, and HMRC treats late filers who show up voluntarily completely differently from those they have to chase. This is a very solved problem.
How we handle it
£179 fixed for the rescue: we pull what HMRC already knows about you (employment, bank interest, pensions — as your agent we can see it), rebuild the rest from bank statements, file within days, and assess penalty appeal grounds as standard. If you never registered and don't have a UTR at all, we sort that too — it adds a couple of weeks, not months.

From first message to done
WhatsApp or the form — a few sentences is enough. A real person replies the same working day.
One price for the job, confirmed before anything starts. Complex case? We say so now, not on the invoice.
Photos of documents are fine. We chase whatever's missing — that's part of the job, not yours.
You review everything first; filings go to HMRC or Companies House electronically with same-day confirmation.

Terms you'll meet along the way
UTR
Your Unique Taxpayer Reference — the 10-digit number HMRC issues when you register for Self Assessment. Lifelong, and needed for every return.
Payments on account
Advance payments toward next year's tax, due 31 January and 31 July, triggered once your bill passes £1,000. The first year they apply effectively bills 150% at once.
SA100
The main Self Assessment return form. Supplementary pages bolt on for employment, self-employment, property, capital gains and foreign income.
Balancing payment
The difference between what your payments on account covered and what the year's tax actually was — settled each 31 January.
Reconciliation
Matching your books to the bank, transaction by transaction — the discipline that makes every other number trustworthy.
Chart of accounts
The category structure your transactions are coded into. A generic one makes reports vague; a tailored one makes them useful.
Aged debtors/creditors
Who owes you and whom you owe, banded by how overdue — the two lists that predict cash flow problems before the bank balance does.
Late Self Assessment: your questions answered
Is it true the £100 penalty applies even if I'm owed a refund?
Yes — the late-filing penalty is for the return, not the tax, so refund-due filers get fined for lateness too. The flip side: filing releases your refund, so late refund-filers are literally paying £100 to delay receiving their own money. File; collect both the refund and the closure.
What if I can't pay the tax bill the return will show?
File anyway — filing and paying are separate obligations, and late-filing penalties are the avoidable ones. Then we set up a Time to Pay arrangement with HMRC (instalments over up to 12 months are routinely agreed online for bills under £30,000). Owing money with a plan is a normal situation; hiding from a number isn't.
HMRC sent a determination — a tax bill they invented. Can that change?
Yes — a determination is HMRC's estimate when no return exists, deliberately unflattering, and it becomes legally collectable unless displaced. Filing the actual return replaces it with reality (deadlines apply, so move quickly). Determinations shrink dramatically on real numbers in most cases we handle.
What does the £129 fee include?
Preparation and online filing of your full SA100 return, including the supplementary pages your situation needs. If your return is more complex — rental income, capital gains — the packages above show the fixed price, and we confirm it in writing before starting.
I've missed the deadline — can you still help?
Yes. Late returns are common and fixable: we prepare and file the outstanding return quickly, and where there's a reasonable excuse we help you appeal penalties. The sooner it's filed, the sooner the penalties stop growing.
What is a UTR exactly?
Your Unique Taxpayer Reference — a 10-digit number HMRC issues when you register for Self Assessment. You can't file a return, join CIS or appoint an accountant to act for you without it. It's yours for life, like a National Insurance number.
Is there a deadline for registering?
Yes — 5 October after the end of the tax year you first had income to declare. Go self-employed in, say, June 2026 and you must be registered by 5 October 2027. Miss it and file late, and the penalties compound. Registering takes days; leaving it doesn't help.
Which bookkeeping software do you use?
Xero, QuickBooks or FreeAgent — whichever suits your business (or whichever you already use). Software subscription can be included in your monthly fee, and we handle all the setup and migration.
What counts as a transaction?
Each line on your bank statement — a payment in or out. Most one-person businesses sit comfortably under 50 a month. If you drift over your band we'll tell you before the fee changes, never after.
