Tax refund accountant

Genuine tax refunds come from mundane causes: emergency or wrong tax codes (especially after job changes), employment expenses never claimed, CIS over-deduction, pension withdrawals taxed at emergency rates, redundancy payments processed badly, and the various reliefs — marriage allowance, professional fees — that require asking. HMRC repays all of it willingly; it just doesn't volunteer.

How we handle it

A word about the refund-company industry: the firms promising thousands via slick ads typically take 30–50% cuts for form-filling, and some have filed claims dubious enough that HMRC clawed money back from the taxpayer later. We charge fixed fees, claim only what's defensible, and the refund arrives in your bank, not routed through ours.

How it works

From first message to done

1. Tell us your situation

WhatsApp or the form — a few sentences is enough. A real person replies the same working day.

2. Fixed quote in writing

One price for the job, confirmed before anything starts. Complex case? We say so now, not on the invoice.

3. Records over WhatsApp or portal

Photos of documents are fine. We chase whatever's missing — that's part of the job, not yours.

4. Approve, we file, you're done

You review everything first; filings go to HMRC or Companies House electronically with same-day confirmation.

Terms you'll meet along the way

UTR

Your Unique Taxpayer Reference — the 10-digit number HMRC issues when you register for Self Assessment. Lifelong, and needed for every return.

Payments on account

Advance payments toward next year's tax, due 31 January and 31 July, triggered once your bill passes £1,000. The first year they apply effectively bills 150% at once.

SA100

The main Self Assessment return form. Supplementary pages bolt on for employment, self-employment, property, capital gains and foreign income.

Balancing payment

The difference between what your payments on account covered and what the year's tax actually was — settled each 31 January.

CIS deduction statement

The monthly statement contractors must give subcontractors showing gross pay and tax withheld — the core evidence for refund claims.

Gross payment status

The 0% deduction rate for subcontractors who pass HMRC's turnover and compliance tests — you're paid in full and settle tax through your own returns.

Verification

The check contractors must run with HMRC before first paying any subcontractor, which dictates the deduction rate: 0%, 20% or 30%.

60-day rule

UK residential property gains must be reported and the tax paid within 60 days of completion — separate from and earlier than Self Assessment.

Questions

Tax refund accountant: your questions answered

How do I know if I'm owed anything?

Common signals: you changed jobs mid-year, worked partial years, wore a uniform or bought tools without claiming, drew a pension lump sum, pay professional fees, or your P800/tax code history looks chaotic. As your agent we can see your HMRC record and give a yes/no with a number — the check itself is quick and honest, including when the answer is 'nothing owed'.

How far back can refunds be claimed?

Four tax years, hard limit — overpayments older than that are gone permanently. That deadline quietly expires every 5 April, so 'I'll look into it sometime' has a real annual cost for anyone with unclaimed years. If you suspect old overpayments, this is worth doing this side of April.

Why not use one of the refund companies from Facebook?

Because their business model is your refund: percentage fees of 30–50%, sometimes deeds of assignment routing your money through them, and in bad cases aggressive claims you become liable for when HMRC reviews them. The same claim done properly costs a fixed fee and carries no surprises. Boring wins here.

What does the £129 fee include?

Preparation and online filing of your full SA100 return, including the supplementary pages your situation needs. If your return is more complex — rental income, capital gains — the packages above show the fixed price, and we confirm it in writing before starting.

I've missed the deadline — can you still help?

Yes. Late returns are common and fixable: we prepare and file the outstanding return quickly, and where there's a reasonable excuse we help you appeal penalties. The sooner it's filed, the sooner the penalties stop growing.

How much CIS refund am I owed?

Most subcontractors have 20% deducted at source all year — usually more than their final tax bill once expenses and the personal allowance are counted. Refunds of £1,500–£3,000 are common, claimed through your Self Assessment.

How quickly will my refund arrive?

Once the return is filed, HMRC typically pays CIS refunds within 2–6 weeks. We file promptly after 6 April so the claim is in the queue as early as possible.

What is the 60-day rule?

If you sell a UK residential property at a gain, you must file a CGT return and pay the tax within 60 days of completion — separate from, and much earlier than, Self Assessment. Penalties apply immediately after day 60. It's the most-missed deadline in UK tax.

What rate of CGT will I pay?

For most assets 18% or 24% depending on your income band. Business asset disposal relief can cut qualifying business sales to 14%. Your other income determines the split — which is exactly what we calculate.
