Year end accounts
Year end is where the whole year's bookkeeping either pays off or gets paid for. Clean books make it quick — we prepare statutory accounts, compute the corporation tax, and file both from £299. Messy books just change the route, not the destination: reconstruction is quoted upfront as its own fixed piece, then the accounts proceed normally.
How we handle it
Sole traders have year ends too: accounts that feed a correct Self Assessment, from £149. Either way the deliverable is the same philosophy — filed on time, explained in plain English, and a short list of what to do differently next year that would make the numbers better.

Terms you'll meet along the way
Statutory accounts
The formal year-end accounts every company must file at Companies House — publicly visible, prepared to FRS standards.
FRS 105 / FRS 102 1A
The two accounting standards small UK companies use: FRS 105 for micro-entities (minimal disclosure), FRS 102 1A for small companies (fuller picture).
CT600
The corporation tax return filed with HMRC alongside a tax computation — due 12 months after year end, though the tax is due at 9 months and a day.
Accounting reference date
Your company's official year-end date, set at incorporation (changeable within limits). Accounts are due 9 months after it.
Marginal relief
The taper between the 19% small-profits rate and the 25% main rate for profits between £50k and £250k — with an effective 26.5% rate inside the band.
Associated companies
Companies under common control split the £50k/£250k thresholds between them — the rule that catches owners of more than one company.
Full expensing
100% first-year deduction on qualifying new plant and machinery for companies — timing purchases around year end matters.
Reconciliation
Matching your books to the bank, transaction by transaction — the discipline that makes every other number trustworthy.
Year end accounts: your questions answered
What do you need from me at year end?
If we do your bookkeeping: nothing, it's already there. Otherwise: bank statements for the full year, sales and purchase records, details of anything bought or sold that lasts (equipment, vehicles), loan statements, and answers to the ten questions we'll ask. The portal collects it; we chase the gaps.
How long does year-end take?
With complete records, draft accounts typically within two weeks, faster near deadlines. The elapsed time is nearly always waiting for missing information — which is why starting two months before the deadline feels leisurely and starting two weeks before doesn't.
Can you do year-end accounts if my previous accountant has my records?
Yes — we request professional clearance and your records directly from them (standard courtesy between firms; they're obliged to cooperate). You send one short email saying you're moving; we handle the rest of the handover.
My company hasn't traded — do I still need to file?
Yes. Even dormant companies must file accounts at Companies House and usually a confirmation statement. Our dormant package (£99) handles it all so you avoid penalties for a company that isn't even trading.
Which accounting standard will my accounts use?
Most small companies file micro-entity accounts under FRS 105 or small-company accounts under FRS 102 Section 1A. We pick the right one for your size and circumstances — it affects what's disclosed publicly at Companies House, and we'll explain the trade-offs.
Do sole traders legally need accounts?
There's no Companies House filing for sole traders, but you must keep records supporting your Self Assessment — and proper accounts almost always save more tax than they cost, because expenses stop slipping through the cracks.
What expenses can I claim?
Anything wholly and exclusively for the business: materials, tools, mileage or vehicle costs, phone, insurance, home-office use, software, professional fees and more. Our job is claiming everything legitimate — clients are usually surprised by what they'd been missing.
What rate of corporation tax will my company pay?
19% on profits up to £50,000, 25% above £250,000, and marginal relief in between — an effective rate that climbs gradually. Associated companies split those thresholds, which catches many owners with more than one company. We calculate it precisely.
The payment is due before the return — is that right?
Yes, oddly: payment is due 9 months and 1 day after year end, but the return itself isn't due until 12 months. We prepare everything well before the payment date so you know the bill with time to plan.
Which bookkeeping software do you use?
Xero, QuickBooks or FreeAgent — whichever suits your business (or whichever you already use). Software subscription can be included in your monthly fee, and we handle all the setup and migration.
What counts as a transaction?
Each line on your bank statement — a payment in or out. Most one-person businesses sit comfortably under 50 a month. If you drift over your band we'll tell you before the fee changes, never after.
