Accountants for TikTok Shop sellers
TikTok Shop compressed the journey from first viral video to real turnover into weeks — which means sellers hit VAT thresholds, stock accounting and tax filings faster than any platform before it. Add creator income to the same person (commissions, live gifts, brand deals, samples) and you get the most mixed income statement in e-commerce, all landing on one tax return.
How we handle it
We untangle it properly: Shop settlements reconciled with commissions and refunds netted right, affiliate and creator-fund income categorised, the gifted-products question answered correctly (yes, free products for promotion generally count as taxable income at market value), and VAT watched in real time because TikTok growth curves don't wait for quarter-end.

From first message to done
WhatsApp or the form — a few sentences is enough. A real person replies the same working day.
One price for the job, confirmed before anything starts. Complex case? We say so now, not on the invoice.
Photos of documents are fine. We chase whatever's missing — that's part of the job, not yours.
You review everything first; filings go to HMRC or Companies House electronically with same-day confirmation.

Terms you'll meet along the way
UTR
Your Unique Taxpayer Reference — the 10-digit number HMRC issues when you register for Self Assessment. Lifelong, and needed for every return.
Payments on account
Advance payments toward next year's tax, due 31 January and 31 July, triggered once your bill passes £1,000. The first year they apply effectively bills 150% at once.
SA100
The main Self Assessment return form. Supplementary pages bolt on for employment, self-employment, property, capital gains and foreign income.
Balancing payment
The difference between what your payments on account covered and what the year's tax actually was — settled each 31 January.
Making Tax Digital (MTD)
HMRC's regime requiring digital records and software-filed returns — long mandatory for VAT, arriving for Income Tax from April 2026.
Flat Rate Scheme
Pay HMRC a fixed percentage of turnover instead of tracking every input. Simpler, but the 16.5% limited-cost-trader rate killed the old easy win for many.
Input vs output VAT
Output VAT is what you charge customers; input VAT is what you pay suppliers. You hand HMRC the difference — which is why missed input claims are pure loss.
Penalty points
Each late VAT return earns a point; at your threshold (4 for quarterly filers) every late return costs £200. Points expire after sustained good behaviour.
Accountants for TikTok Shop sellers: your questions answered
Are free products and gifts from brands taxable?
When they're payment-in-kind for promotion — sent in exchange for content, or as affiliate incentives — generally yes, at market value, as trading income. Genuinely unsolicited one-offs with no obligation sit differently. Where the volume is material, the right habit is logging items and values as they arrive; retrofitting a year of PR packages is miserable.
My Shop took off mid-year — when did I need to register for VAT?
The moment any rolling 12 months of taxable sales passed £90,000 — or the moment you expected the next 30 days alone to cross it, which fast viral growth can trigger. Late registration gets backdated with penalties, so if you're anywhere near either test, we check your numbers this week, not at year end.
Live gifts and creator fund money — where do they go on a return?
Self-employment income alongside your other creator earnings: gifts converted to cash via the platform, fund payouts, commissions and brand fees all belong on the return, with your content costs (equipment, props, editing, portions of phone and home) deductible against the lot. One return, properly categorised — that's the job.
Amazon already collects VAT on some of my sales — what's left to do?
Marketplaces collect VAT in specific cases (like overseas sellers' UK sales), but UK-established sellers still account for VAT on most sales, reclaim input VAT, and must report everything correctly. Mixing up 'marketplace-collected' and 'seller-collected' revenue is the most common e-commerce VAT error we fix.
Why don't my bank deposits match my sales?
Because marketplaces deposit net settlements — sales minus fees, refunds, reserves and adjustments, across date boundaries. Proper e-commerce bookkeeping reconciles the settlement reports, not the bank line. That's exactly what we do monthly.
What does the £129 fee include?
Preparation and online filing of your full SA100 return, including the supplementary pages your situation needs. If your return is more complex — rental income, capital gains — the packages above show the fixed price, and we confirm it in writing before starting.
I've missed the deadline — can you still help?
Yes. Late returns are common and fixable: we prepare and file the outstanding return quickly, and where there's a reasonable excuse we help you appeal penalties. The sooner it's filed, the sooner the penalties stop growing.
When do I have to register for VAT?
When your taxable turnover in any rolling 12-month period passes £90,000 — a rolling test, not your accounting year, and the most common way businesses get caught out. We monitor it for bookkeeping clients automatically.
Which VAT scheme is best for me?
It depends on your margins and customers. The flat-rate scheme suits some service businesses; cash accounting helps if customers pay slowly; standard suits most. We'll compare them for your numbers before registering you.
Which bookkeeping software do you use?
Xero, QuickBooks or FreeAgent — whichever suits your business (or whichever you already use). Software subscription can be included in your monthly fee, and we handle all the setup and migration.
What counts as a transaction?
Each line on your bank statement — a payment in or out. Most one-person businesses sit comfortably under 50 a month. If you drift over your band we'll tell you before the fee changes, never after.
